Goodnight…. sleep tight?

Becoming a parent is one of the most amazing, incredible, life altering things that can ever happen to you. You’re suddenly in charge of this tiny little person and your whole world suddenly revolves around them, their wants and their needs. Everyone knows becoming a parent involves a whole lot of sleepless nights. Babies are hard work. What you’re not told, is that those sleepless nights carry on long after your baby is sleeping through the night. Well, it’s true in my case anyway!

Both of my boys have always been fantastic sleepers, sleeping through the night from around 10-12 weeks old. They have also both been in their own rooms, in their own cots, from 12 weeks old. Welcome over protective mother to the picture, who has spent every night since, waking up several times to go and check on them and spending a ridiculous amount of time listening each night to make sure I can hear them breathing. They cough, I’m in there. They groan, I’m in there. I have become a ridiculously light sleeper, and even when the boys are at a sleepover I still find myself unable to have a decent night’s sleep. Grooooooooan.

So a couple of weeks ago, I was contacted by the people from Silentnight Beds Scotland who asked if i would like to try out a sleep accessory that may help my sleepless night situation. I had to fill in a survey so that they could see my sleeping habits and they would then send me out a suitable sleep accessory (unfortunately, a new bed wasn’t one of the options – gutted ūüėČ )

A week later I received a lovely parcel from Laura Ashley containing their “Fresh Linen and Jasmine Room Spray.”

The packaging is really lovely. Solid glass bottle with a small polka-dotted design and a silver lid. Lovely. Now, this scent is described on the Laura Ashley website as being;

an uplifting room spray which is infused with a Fresh Linen and Jasmine fragrance to give a wonderfully ambient aroma to the home.

First of all, I will be honest, I was slightly perplexed when I received this. A lavender scent I would have understood. But I had never thought of Linen and Jasmine as scents that would aid sleep.

This room spray really does smell beautiful. It only takes a little bit for the room to become full of the scent. It reminds me hot summer days, clean washing with a hint of sun cream thrown in for good measure. It’s gorgeous!

I’ve tried this room spray out for a week now, and whilst it does make your room smell beautiful, I’m unsure as to whether it did help me sleep better. Feel more relaxed as I was falling asleep? Yes, I think so. A clean, tidy bedroom that smells GORGEOUS is always going to help you relax. But as for an unbroken deep sleep, then I’ll have to be honest and admit that it didn’t really help out in that area. I did wake up in the morning feeling refreshed and the room still held the smell of the spray which was really impressive! I’ve actually taken to spraying the room spray in my living room, and have had numerous compliments on it (particularly from Aiden, who loves it!) so overall, a gorgeous uplifting scent but not necessarily one that will aid sleep.

Here are some of my top tips if you’re a light sleeper/rubbish sleeper like me :

  • Try having a hot bubble bath before bed. Radox do a range of sleep aid bubble baths that might also help with relaxation. Bliss.

  • Make sure you have a clean and tidy bedroom. It really can make all the difference. Clean sheets and new jammies are my absolute most favourite thing in the world!

  • Listening to relaxing music can help you have a better sleep. I went through a phase where I was really struggling to fall asleep. I found several pieces of music on YouTube which include “binaural tones” which are sound patterns which are specifically designed to produce brain waves associated with a relaxed state of mind! I’m usually completely comatose by about 7 minutes in. (Note, if you have a weak bladder, the first ones probably not the best for you, a lot of running water!)

  • Make sure you have a comfortable mattress/bed. It makes all the difference! If you’re looking for a new one, head over and have a wee look at the Silentnight Beds website here.

I hope a few of these tips can help you out. Running on empty is never good for anyone, whether you’re a parent or not. A good nights sleep can make all the difference.

Paper Themes Personalised Poster Review

I was lucky enough to receive a personalised poster from Paper Themes a few weeks ago. With our anniversary coming up, I thought it was perfect timing! After all, your first wedding anniversary is traditionally celebrated with a paper gift.

Afer having a quick look through the website, I decided on the poster “Our Story” which is a described as “a stunning family story explained in a range of fonts and makes a fantastic keepsake for all the family to cherish throughout the years.” I had been looking for something like this since our wedding last year and was thrilled it was one of the options available.¬†I then emailed my personalisation to Paper Themes and within a day had received a proof (which was just as well as our surname had been misspelled) and then waited on delivery. It is a really easy to use website which makes the whole experience very simple.

Unfortunately i missed the delivery, which was only a few days later which is fantastic. However, due to the post being seriously hit and miss in my area, I didn’t actually receive my poster for another 2 weeks. This is by no means Paper Theme’s fault though – their delivery time exceeded expectations!

The poster was delivered in a cardboard poster tube with a lovely personalised note from Liz at Paper Themes inside. The quality of the poster is amazing, set on a fantastic quality white card and the text really pops out.

I’ve been told IKEA frames are a perfect fit for these posters, but I’ve not had time to get there yet so for the purpose of a few pictures I just used a frame I already had.

At £25, it is quite alot of money for what is, simply, a poster, but I think for that personalised touch, the quality and the speed of delivery it is well worth it.

Fat Fighting Friday – Week 8

Now, I’ve had a bloody amazing time. Paul is off work on holiday so we’ve been indulging in a wee bit of eating out and then I had my cousin’s fianc√©e’s hen night on Saturday. Which, as you can probably tell, was fab! I did go with the best of intentions…but as soon as the cocktails were brought out I was a goner! I don’t get out with the girls much but¬†when I do – I more than make up for it!

So Saturday included cocktails, champagne and vodka, as well as an Indian buffet. Whoops. Sunday, therefore, was a complete and utter¬†write off as I had the official hangover from hell.¬†And again, I ended up picking all day at anything that didn’t make me want to throw up. Lovely, I know.

I just couldn’t get my healthy mojo back but decided to attempt the gym and even managed to swim 50 lengths at the swimming on Tuesday. All in the name of damage control.

Realistically, after last week’s fab weight loss, I had thought I would probably maintain this week if I’d stuck to plan. So i went to weigh in expecting a 3-4lb gain. So, I was MORE than pleasantly surprised to find I had maintained last weeks weight. No idea how right enough! Unless it comes back and bites me on the arse next week!

Again, this next week is a busy one. Saturday is mine and the hubby’s first wedding anniversary so we’re planning a wee night away and then it’s my cousin’s wedding on Wednesday. Weigh in is Thursday. Plan – stay away from the wine! And the cocktails! Would love to lose 1.5lbs next week to get into that next stone bracket so Slimming World head back on!

As a side note, I did receive a new wee gadget in the post this morning! The new Fitbug Air which I have been sent to review. Looking forward to getting out and getting more active and seeing how it goes. Will be doing a review on here within the next few weeks so keep an eye out on that!

Swimming Saturday – Week 6

It was our second from last swimming lesson yesterday morning. Cant believe that’s the boys nearly at the end of the first block.

We got¬†Aiden and Logan’s Block 1 assessment yesterday. It’s fantastic to get something on paper because as much as I harp on about how they’re improving – I don’t really have a clue. So to get written feedback from the instructors is great.

Once the boys have completed each step (below) they can then move up to the next level. Currently, Logan has completed the first step and Aiden has completed the first two. In Aiden’s assessment, it’s also noted that he is able to swim a short distance, which is fantastic!

With both of the boys, the main thing we need to work on is their confidence. With Aiden,¬†during yesterday’s lesson, he realised that when he was¬†swimming under water, he was able to stand up on his own without waiting for his teacher Ali to get him up. His wee face was a picture. So proud of himself and was telling us on the way home that means he can do anything¬†by himself now (within reason obviously) There are so many transferable skills gained from doing the swimming lessons at this age. They learn discipline, confidence, waiting to take their turn etc. It’s¬†led to¬†a massive improvement in their overall behaviour. Well, sometimes. Boys will be boys!

The next course of swimming lessons begins on Wednesday 14th August. There is a 9 week course covering classes on a Wednesday РSunday (£81) and an 8 week course covering Monday and Tuesday classes (£72). They are also now taking bookings for crash courses during the Summer and details can be found on the Making Waves Website.

Fat Fighting Friday – Weeks 6 and 7

Sorry about the radio silence last week folks! Got to admit, after weigh in last Thursday, where I lost yet another half a pound, I was a bit disheartened and decided to take a wee break and refocus.

On Friday, I had my usual trip to Curves Shawlands for my workout and my first months weigh and measure. I was absolutely dreading it – mainly because I was in such a downer after only having lost the half a pound the day before. Well….¬†I cried after getting my measurements. Over the moon doesn’t even cover it:

Bust РLost 1.75 inches 

Waist – Lost 1.5 inches

Abdomen – Lost 2.5 inches

Hips – Lost 1.5 inches

Thighs (x2) – Lost 5.00 inches

Arms (x2) – Lost 0.5 inches

Total loss of inches in 4 weeks – 12.75INCHES!!

I have also lost 9.5lbs in the 4 weeks since joining Curves, my body fat percentage has dropped by over 2% and my BMI has dropped 2 points aswell. All i can say is definitely take your measurements! I was so close to giving the diet up but after finding out my measurements it gave me the kick up the arse that I (desperately)needed.

So, after this I went home with a new determination. I knew I only needed 2.5lbs to get my 1stone shiney, and i needed to get it this week for my own sanity! So i wrote out a meal plan, stuck to it all week (even taking my¬†wee Tupperware dishes full of SW¬†food when I was out with my friends and to a BBQ – don’t worry, they laughed and made fun of me too) and began writing a food diary again this week. I also tried to up my water intake as I’ve found Diet Coke (which Im slightly addicted to) has started playing havoc with my body and is really affecting me migraine-wise. I had no Diet Coke for 4 days this week and felt a million times better for it… (Although I did celebrate my weight loss today…with a diet coke. What.a.twat.)

Anyways, onto weigh in today. Well I am now the proud new owner of these….

I stepped on those scales…praying for the 2.5lbs. And I nearly cried when I realised I’d lost a whopping 5lbs!!

Yup, FIVE WHOLE POUNDS!

Plus, I got Slimmer of the Week which I never expected to get!! Over the moon!!¬†That takes my overall weight loss to 1stone 2.5lbs in 7 weeks. I have 4.5lbs to my next shiney (1and a half stone) but am being realistic that next week I will probably either have a small loss or a maintain to even things out a bit. But, I’ll set a wee target of 1.5lbs off, because that’ll take me into the next stone bracket. YAY!

What I’ve Been Munching:

We had a taster at class last week and I stressed out the whole week before it trying to decide what to make. I’m not the best cook…my own children and husband rarely, (okay, never) eat my concoctions so I was terrified of letting other people try it – and risk food poisoning! So i decided I’d keep it simple and make up an easy¬†cous cous salad. Well, it went down amazingly! People really seemed to love it, and it’s so quick, easy and filling so I thought I’d share the recipe on here (Sorry, no pics, it got munched too quickly ūüėČ )

What you need:

Cous Cous (amount depending on how hungry you are ūüėČ )

500ml of vegetable stock

1 onion (chopped)

1 clove of garlic (peeled and chopped)

1 pepper chopped (or you can use frozen peppers)

1/2 can of chickpeas (drained)

Fry Light

Handful of cherry tomatoes (halved)

1 lemon (or lemon juice)

What you do:

Make up your vegetable stock using boiling water and a vegetable stock cube.

Empty the desired amount of couscous into a bowl and pour over the stock until it is about an inch above the couscous. Cover the bowl with cling film and leave.

Meanwhile, fry your garlic and onion in fry light for 2 minutes before adding your peppers and frying for another 5 minutes until soft. Add half a can of drained chickpeas and cook until soft (about another 5-7minutes)

Remove cling film from bowl of couscous and fluff up with a fork. If the couscous seems too dry, simply add more stock and leave again. Once it is ready, add the cooked vegetables and stir through.

Then add the halved cherry tomatoes and the juice of 1 lemon and mix through.

Can be eaten hot or cold.

So the plan this week is to just stick to plan! I have a hen night on Saturday but am planning on being on my best behaviour (ha.ha. I know) The hubby also stops work for two weeks holidays tomorrow so am dreading him being about as he is very persuasive when it comes to the old “let’s just have a takeaway…” chat.

On that same note, I have never ever weighed less than P. When we first started going out (okay, we were 16) he had a 28inch waist and was ridiculously skinny. Just saying Mr M… you better watch your back ūüėČ

Swimming Saturday – Week 5

Week 5 of the boys swimming lessons today. I can’t believe how quickly this block has went – only 2 weeks left!

We’ve been out enjoying the amazing sunshine this week, and after a long day out yesterday I knew the boys wouldn’t be in the best of moods when I woke them up for swimming this morning. Aiden was fine. Logan, on the other hand, hadn’t even opened an eye and he was already moaning and saying he wasn’t going. Joy.

We got to the pool and Logan was still determined he wasn’t getting in and was actually getting quite upset. So much so that I was quite close to just putting his clothes back on and letting him sit it out.

Tom noticed how upset he had gotten and took Logan to one side and had a wee talk with him that really calmed him down. Off he trotted into the pool afterwards quite the thing right enough! Wee chancer.

The boys progress this week is still on the same level as last week I would say. Aiden’s being taught how to use his arms to move him through the water now and I think when he has the hang of that it’ll make a massive improvement.

I still find it unbelievable just how far they have come. Aiden is absolutely loving¬†Making Waves¬†– after every lesson he can’t wait to tell everyone about his lesson and how well he is doing. Logan, well,¬†I’m still unsure whether he is enjoying it or not. He is only 3 and I’m sure in a couple of years when he’s Aiden’s age he will be alot more excited by it. I think the best thing for us to do is to keep him at it because, in my opinion, ¬†the boys being able to swim confidently, at a young age,¬†will be a massive advantage to them.

Room for Improvement – A MoneySupermarket Challenge!

I was amazed last week, when I received an email from Moneysupermarket asking me if I would like to take part in their latest campaign, the Room for Improvement Challenge.

Home improvements don’t have to cost the earth; for a very affordable sum, you can make changes that totally transform the look and feel of a room!

To prove this, we‚Äôre¬† launching our ‚ÄėRoom for Improvement‚Äô competition, in which we will be asking site owners to get creative and show us how they can improve a room in their home for just ¬£50. Whether it‚Äôs a lick of paint on a wall, creating a centre piece or recovering an old chair, we want to hear all about it!

Well, never one to shy away from a challenge, I accepted straight away and was sent ¬£50 to go about improving a room of our choice. We were torn between doing the bathroom (as my husband’s failed attempt at laying a floor is driving me insane!) or doing the downstairs hall (as it hasn’t been in touched in 5 years, since we first moved in!) We finally decided on the hall, as we were more likely to stick to budget, and set off in search of some inspiration.

Now ¬£50, to us anyway,¬†isn’t necessarily a¬†low budget. When we first moved into our own house, we were barely out of our teens and¬†had very little money between us. We still managed to make our house livable and made it our own. I’m not ashamed to admit I love a browse in B&M stores, Home Bargains and the odd charity shop. There are plenty of deals to be had if you know where to look.

So we managed to get some wallpaper from B&M (warning : we like bold prints. Not to everyone’s taste but we love it) as well as some other bits and pieces and a unit from IKEA. Luckily for me, my father-in-law is a painter and decorator so he set about transforming my hall for me (thanks Pat!) Obviously I still got to do all the fun, pretty stuff at the end. Yay!

I am completely over the moon with the results! It feels so much cosier and homely! And all this was just over the £50 budget!! Honestly!

We managed to find the wallpaper in the “bargain bin” part of B&M. There were a few marks on the rolls but you can’t notice them when the wallpaper is up. We managed to get 4 rolls for ¬£15.96!

We also managed to get two of these “Magic Rugs” from B&M. They were on deal at 2 for ¬£5 and are machine washable which is great! Another bargain to be had!

The unit, we got from IKEA and cost £20. We already had the lamp in the bedroom upstairs, and the box inserts I was using in my wardrobe but they fit perfectly!

I picked up this wee frame in B&M stores aswell. They always have a massive selection of frames in there for really good prices! This one was a snip at £2.99!

We already have these lampshades in our living room so decided to pick up another one for the hall. This is another B&M number and costs £3.99.

It’s really difficult to see in this picture but I managed to pick up a fantastic mirror that looks amazing up! It’s massive, and since it had a wee chip in the corner I managed to get it for ¬£4.99 down from ¬£7.99, again in B&M stores!

Swimming Saturday – Week 4

My dad decided to tag along to the boys’ swimming lesson today. He’s a great swimmer himself and has always loved swimming. My brother and I are severe let downs in the swimming department (I can swim although there is no stroke/skill involved, more a “throw myself in and hope for the best” ethos…¬†Michael¬†can barely float) so I think he’s secretly hoping for¬†at least a doggy paddle¬†from his grandsons.

I was actually really looking forward to him seeing their progress, particularly Aiden. So the boys were in the pool and Aiden took his turn. Again, he was under the water and attempting to swim¬†towards the instructor on his own. I turned to ask my dad what he thought, and the poor¬†guy was an emotional wreck (sorry to broadcast this dad, but you were) Obviously, this then made me well up like a bit of an idiot. What a picture. It is just a case of absolute pride in how quickly they have progressed. I can’t reinforce it enough that 4 weeks ago, I couldn’t get Aiden in a shower as it was “too wet”. Watching him in the water now is like watching a completely different child. Amazing.

Logan, on the other hand, was being his usual overly stubborn self. He’s been a bit of a tantrum queen this week. He’s taken a severe dislike to the goggles he has to wear to the lessons and every two minutes was moaning and trying to get them off. I don’t know if it’s the fact that they’re steaming up, or if they’re too tight or if he’s just being his usual pernickety self but he was just not up for it today at all.

Step in Tom, who again was fantastic with Logan and dealt with the situation. If i had been with Logan on my own, I probably would have given up and let him out of the pool. But if I had done that the likelihood of him wanting to come back would have been zero. Tom clearly knows what he’s doing and I have no problems at all putting complete trust in him and what he says when it comes to the boys and their swimming.

The amazing thing was, that Logan did get back in the pool. And was even starting to kick his legs and move himself across the pool. He is the most stubborn child I’ve ever met, so that is a huge deal! He is still using his float which I am happy with – ¬†the instructors are taking his confidence and ability levels into account.

We are hoping this week we will be able to take the boys to the swimming ourselves as¬†Paul is off work. He works so much and misses out on getting to see them and they are more than excited at the prospect of getting to show off! I’m hoping to be able to get some video/photos of them doing that as long as the pool is quiet enough.

Making Waves Swimming have just released the timetables for their crash courses over the summer holidays. I’ve heard from my friends that these are fantastic and you can really notice a massive improvement in just a short space of time. I’m definitely getting the boys booked up! Fat Fighting Friday – Week 5

imagesI think everyone reaches that point, just after the first month of a diet, where their interest slightly wanes. This happened to me this week. Majorly.

Between nursery visits, school visits, the bank holiday and meetings, I’ve either had no time to cook, or simply no energy. I’ve not eaten much in the way of¬†fruit or vegetables.¬† This is the first week where my fridge has remained full. And I HATE throwing away unused food because it’s “off.” I’m annoyed with myself for not being organised enough and for losing my mojo a wee bit. Especially as I’m so close to that stone!

I lost half a pound this week. I didn’t gain¬†– which is an absolute bloody miracle. So 11lbs off now in 5 weeks. I think it is more down to exercise this week that I have lost any weight at all. I’ve been managing to go the gym a least 4 times a week and have miraculously rediscovered my waist! Yay! I really am enjoying exercising, and the gym I go to (Curves Shawlands)¬†is full of amazing inspirational people and the trainers are fantastic!

In other news this week, I’ve went and bought myself a weighted Hula Hoop.

Yup. You read that right.

My neighbours must now be even more determined that I am indeed, mental, after seeing me attempt it in my garden whilst screaming in agony. Those things hurt!! Doesn’t tell you that on the box!! I now have hips that are 20 shades of bruised but (and this must make me some kind of weirdo) I actually really enjoyed it!

Swimming Saturday – Week 3

Another week for the boys at their swimming lessons, and another week as a proud and seriously amazed mummy! Their progress with Making Waves Swimming has been unbelievable in the few weeks they have been there!

Wee bit of background this week. Yesterday, I spent a beautiful rare sunny day in the A&E with Logan. Bloody typical Logan. He hurt his foot a few weeks ago at a local soft play (that I’m very tempted to blog about as I’ve had so many run ins there it’s unbelievable!) and then fell again on Thursday. I noticed yesterday morning he still wasn’t able to put any weight on it so just wanted to get it double checked. Three hours, two x-rays and a million bribery cookies later – we head home with a limping Logan and a hairline fracture in his foot. Lovely. No plaster right enough!¬†And all just in time for the holiday weekend! I’ll say it again – bloody typical Logan!

Anyway, I was a wee bit wary taking him today, but after asking at the hospital they said he should be fine and the water might even ease the pressure on is wee foot. I let Tom know as soon as we were in, and he took both the boys over to the pool. No tears, no tantrums, no questions (from the boys, not Tom). Perfect!

I can’t believe Aiden’s progress. Every week his confidence is growing and he absolutely loves it! He spent most of his lesson today under water trying to move across the pool but was having a few wee problems kicking his legs out. I’m sure by next week he’ll have it mastered though – he was definitely determined when we were leaving that was going to be able to swim¬†the whole length of the pool soon. And that we¬†have to build him a pool in the garden. Hmmm.

Logan did brilliantly considering his dodgy foot! Again, holding onto the float, but was managing to get his legs up, although I noticed he struggled a wee bit to kick the injured foot but that is completely understandable.

As the boys have been going to their swimming lessons for a few weeks now, I feel confident in saying that I cannot recommend Making Waves Swimming¬†enough. The involved, confident teaching style, the fantastic instructors and the passion of the owners is apparent. It’s all about the kids and that is all that you look for.
