Aiden – First 3 months at school!

My gorgeous boy has been in Primary one for 3 months now. Three whole months. I have no idea what has happened this year but the time is flying by and I don’t know how to feel about it!

Aiden has absolutely amazed us. We always knew he would have no problems settling in at school. He was more than ready for the last few months of nursery and did nothing but talk about school for months! But I never expected him to be as settled and to pick things up as quickly as he has!

I know every parent sings their child’s praises but I have never been prouder of him. He has been getting certificate after certificate, awards from the head teacher and his report on his first ever parents night (which I managed not to cry through…yay!) was incredible! He is already showing particular strengths with his mathematics and the speed in which he has picked up his reading is amazing. He really is a wee star.

Of course, his favourite parts of school are gym class and play time – typical boy!

We had real worries with what school we were going to send Aiden to. We had two choices – the local school or the school both myself and Paul went to and is in the area we grew up in. The latter, I think, was more of a comfortable choice, as we knew what to expect from it.  I’ll admit we don’t live in the best area – so the local school was always going to be a risk. However, it is a brand new school building (opened in 2009) and has all the latest technology, IT equipment and facilities. It is a small school, with an extremely caring, understanding and skilled teaching staff, a strict but open head teacher and fantastic extra curricular activities and groups. One of the perks of being in a “deprived” area.

Sending Aiden to that school has been the best decision we have ever made. He is thriving, has made a new group of friends and is surprising us every day.

Yes. I’m one of those over bearing, embarrassing, ridiculously proud mummies. Don’t worry, I even cringe at myself. But for any parent with children going to school next year, I just wanted them to know that the worst part is the lead up to it. You will worry every single day. You will doubt yourself numerous times. You will send them to school with a suitcase full of food so they don’t starve. You will be tempted to turn up at play time just to make sure they’re ok.

But they’ll be fine. More than fine. They’ll surprise you every single day. Appreciate every moment of it – because this is the time you really notice them starting to grow up.

And this was Aiden with his first reading book – two weeks after he first started school. Like I said – overly proud mummy.

Fat Fighting Friday – Weeks 6 and 7

Sorry about the radio silence last week folks! Got to admit, after weigh in last Thursday, where I lost yet another half a pound, I was a bit disheartened and decided to take a wee break and refocus.

On Friday, I had my usual trip to Curves Shawlands for my workout and my first months weigh and measure. I was absolutely dreading it – mainly because I was in such a downer after only having lost the half a pound the day before. Well…. I cried after getting my measurements. Over the moon doesn’t even cover it:

Bust – Lost 1.75 inches

Waist – Lost 1.5 inches

Abdomen – Lost 2.5 inches

Hips – Lost 1.5 inches

Thighs (x2) – Lost 5.00 inches

Arms (x2) – Lost 0.5 inches

Total loss of inches in 4 weeks – 12.75INCHES!!

I have also lost 9.5lbs in the 4 weeks since joining Curves, my body fat percentage has dropped by over 2% and my BMI has dropped 2 points aswell. All i can say is definitely take your measurements! I was so close to giving the diet up but after finding out my measurements it gave me the kick up the arse that I (desperately)needed.

So, after this I went home with a new determination. I knew I only needed 2.5lbs to get my 1stone shiney, and i needed to get it this week for my own sanity! So i wrote out a meal plan, stuck to it all week (even taking my wee Tupperware dishes full of SW food when I was out with my friends and to a BBQ – don’t worry, they laughed and made fun of me too) and began writing a food diary again this week. I also tried to up my water intake as I’ve found Diet Coke (which Im slightly addicted to) has started playing havoc with my body and is really affecting me migraine-wise. I had no Diet Coke for 4 days this week and felt a million times better for it… (Although I did celebrate my weight loss today…with a diet coke. What.a.twat.)

Anyways, onto weigh in today. Well I am now the proud new owner of these….

I stepped on those scales…praying for the 2.5lbs. And I nearly cried when I realised I’d lost a whopping 5lbs!!

Plus, I got Slimmer of the Week which I never expected to get!! Over the moon!! That takes my overall weight loss to 1stone 2.5lbs in 7 weeks. I have 4.5lbs to my next shiney (1and a half stone) but am being realistic that next week I will probably either have a small loss or a maintain to even things out a bit. But, I’ll set a wee target of 1.5lbs off, because that’ll take me into the next stone bracket. YAY!

What I’ve Been Munching:

We had a taster at class last week and I stressed out the whole week before it trying to decide what to make. I’m not the best cook…my own children and husband rarely, (okay, never) eat my concoctions so I was terrified of letting other people try it – and risk food poisoning! So i decided I’d keep it simple and make up an easy cous cous salad. Well, it went down amazingly! People really seemed to love it, and it’s so quick, easy and filling so I thought I’d share the recipe on here (Sorry, no pics, it got munched too quickly 😉 )

What you need:

Cous Cous (amount depending on how hungry you are 😉 )

500ml of vegetable stock

1 onion (chopped)

1 clove of garlic (peeled and chopped)

1 pepper chopped (or you can use frozen peppers)

1/2 can of chickpeas (drained)

Fry Light

Handful of cherry tomatoes (halved)

1 lemon (or lemon juice)

What you do:

Make up your vegetable stock using boiling water and a vegetable stock cube.

Empty the desired amount of couscous into a bowl and pour over the stock until it is about an inch above the couscous. Cover the bowl with cling film and leave.

Meanwhile, fry your garlic and onion in fry light for 2 minutes before adding your peppers and frying for another 5 minutes until soft. Add half a can of drained chickpeas and cook until soft (about another 5-7minutes)

Remove cling film from bowl of couscous and fluff up with a fork. If the couscous seems too dry, simply add more stock and leave again. Once it is ready, add the cooked vegetables and stir through.

Then add the halved cherry tomatoes and the juice of 1 lemon and mix through.

Can be eaten hot or cold.

So the plan this week is to just stick to plan! I have a hen night on Saturday but am planning on being on my best behaviour (ha.ha. I know) The hubby also stops work for two weeks holidays tomorrow so am dreading him being about as he is very persuasive when it comes to the old “let’s just have a takeaway…” chat.

On that same note, I have never ever weighed less than P. When we first started going out (okay, we were 16) he had a 28inch waist and was ridiculously skinny. Just saying Mr M… you better watch your back 😉

Onwards and downwards… I’m a happy camper today.

I'm this happy :)

I’m this happy 🙂

Hope all your weight loss journeys are going well! Would love to hear how any of you are getting on! And if you are having a bad week – don’t give up. Try and stay to group, write a food diary again and stick to it. You’ll be back on track before you know it.

What’s in my handbag – mummy style!

Recently, I’ve been attempting to make my way through the backlog of blogs I’ve come across but haven’t managed to properly read. Today was a great day for my catch up and I found some blogs I love!

One of my favourites was a blog by Littlemisssdc which is just fab and, in particular, her post What’s in your bag?

Now, i waste a ridiculous amount of time on Youtube watching all the beauty vloggers videos of their gigantic designer handbags, filled to the brim with high-end make up, designer sunglasses, Ipads and the like.

My handbag really isn’t like that. Really, really not.

I go for handbags the size of  small trailers – at least big enough for the kitchen sink, obviously! Wipeable is a must as my boys have a tendency to spill stuff constantly at, on or near me (water, juice, melted chocolate, playdough, slime…) I’m not one for compartments as I usually have at least one ridiculously large toy that Logan has decided to bring along with him, only to decide 5 minutes later that he hates it.

For some reason I always have my make-up bag with me, which is laughable because there is not a hope in hell I’d ever have the chance/time/energy to reapply my rushed, beat-the-zombie-mum-look make up. Luckily, I’m passed the changing bag stage now and no longer have to carry nappies/cream/nappysacks with me everywhere I go… unfortunately these have been replaced by a ridiculous amount of crap. As you will see.

You might want to take note (and be warned) that I haven’t even checked what is in my handbag just now. So this could be embarrassingly mortifying. But hey ho, all in the name of blogging i suppose.

So here it is, in all it’s glory. My handbag – mummy style.

Excuse the absolutely disgusting brush. My mum will be completely mortified.  Sorry Mum.

The contents of my ridiculous handbag are:

1. Make up bag full to the brim of mostly lip glosses/stains. I never use them. And 1 disgusting hair brush. Note to self – buy a new one. This one is beyond saving.

2. One fluorescent pink purse – bright colour makes it easy to find in overly messy handbag.

3. A bottle of Cutex Nourishing nail varnish remover, two L’Oreal Colour Riche nail varnishes and a Boots mini firm hold hair spray. Because you just never know!

4. Three snack packs from my latest Graze box. Aiden loves these. I hide them in my bag so he can’t get them. Whoops.

5. Two inhalers – because I have the breathing ability of a 90 year old 60-a-day smoker. Lovely.

6.  Marc Jacobs Daisy Summer perfume – love this. The boys, however, loved the lid and it is currently being used as part of their police headquarters game thing.

7. One Woody toy, a Lego board, a mini car from Cars and a water gun. No explanation.

8.  One packet of baby wipes. I have extremely sticky children.

9. Two odd socks and two pairs of the boys pants. The odd socks seem to collect in whichever handbag I’m using. I have absolutely no idea how it happens!

10. My Kindle Fire – this is the best thing in the world. Ever. Shame the battery lasts all of 10 minutes!

11. A notebook, a pen and a pack of highlighters. The boys were getting their haircuts today – distractions needed.

12. Lovefilm membership renewal reminder thing. Don’t think that will be getting used! And my Birdsong ticket from a few weeks ago (must start clearing out handbag!)

13. The boys record books for the health visitor. Was double checking the MMR situation and realised Logan’s wasn’t noted in his book. Enter me, overly dramatic mummy thinking I hadn’t taken him for his jag and he was now going to get the measles. Turns out, I’d just forgotten to take his book to that appointment. Exit scatty mummy.

What do you keep in your handbag? Everything including the kitchen sink? Or are you more organised? (please, teach me!)

Craft Fayre/Nearly New Sale… fundraising for Destiny Lifeline

Mummy Meet Up Glasgow - Glasgow, United Kingdom

Recently, I joined a group on Facebook called Mummy Meet Up Glasgow. Now, I’m not usually one for joining groups like this but after a quick read through, all the ladies seemed lovely and it’s always nice to have a little bit of extra support and chat with other mummies in your area.

In the time I’ve been part of the group, I have watched three of these ladies (Aileen, Louise and Laura), in conjunction with Dorca’s Cafe,  organise an unbelievable craft fayre/nearly new sale. They have managed to get the most amazing donations and the fayre is looking to be an incredible day.

The Craft Fayre/Nearly New Sale is being held on Saturday the 13th April from 10:00am- 4:00pm in Dorca’s Cafe, which is located within Destiny Church, 1120 Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow.

Raffle tickets at this fair are £1 and prizes include a fun family photo experience from Venture Photography (worth £245) an A3 photo to canvas print, donated by The Picture Framer, a 3 course lunch for 2 at Cafe Noor Tandoori, a beauty voucher worth £40  for use at “Dolled up”, a full service and MOT courtesy of Hillington MOT Centre, a two course lunch for two at The Ivory Hotel (one of my favourite places!) amongst around 30 other prizes. There will also be stalls selling everything from jewellery to cupcakes, candles to cosmetics, handbags and even massages! It really is amazing! There will also be entertainment for the little ones in the shape of face painting and the Destiny Dog. For a full list of the incredible prizes, and to chat to a group of lovely mummies, feel free to add them over on facebook here and add their business page here.

This event is fundraising for Destiny Lifeline, a women’s initiative that provides real friendships and helps women to re-establish self worth, confidence and real sense of purpose. It is set up to reach Glasgow’s most vulnerable women – women who are being abused, in prostitution or imprisonment. It is an extremely worthwhile cause and every donation really does help.

Again, the Craft Fayre/Nearly New Sale is being held on Saturday the 13th April from 10:00am- 4:00pm in Dorca’s Cafe, which is located within Destiny Church, 1120 Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow.

L’oreal Colour Riche Nail – Review

I am different when my nails are done.  I am more dynamic.  I gesticulate more, I am better at scaring my staff.  I can indicate impatience by drumming on tabletops and I can wrap up a meeting with a few choice clatters.”
―    Marian Keyes

As it was my birthday on Saturday, I became the happy owner of several new products (thanks hubby!) Now, I have never really been an avid fan of nail varnishes or really clued up on what’s hot and what’s not – mainly because i rarely have time to pee never mind paint my nails and wait for them to dry. But recently, I made a conscious decision to attempt to have, and enjoy, some “me time” and let me tell you, it’s bloody amazing!

204 - Boudoir Rose

204 – Boudoir Rose

In amongst my bag of goodies was a L’oreal Colour Riche Nail in the colour 204 – Boudoir Rose. I’m loving really pinky and beige nudes on nails at the moment, and this colour is just beautiful.

The Colour Riche Nail is L’Oreal‘s first long lasting mini nail collection which boasts 41 gel-based colours. It also includes the “Liquigel technology” which offers lasting shine and an even coverage on the nails.

On first seeing the packaging, it did slightly remind me of the free nail varnishes that used to be given out in the old “teeny bopper” magazines, but i think this is mainly because of the size of it.

This nail varnish is the most easy-to-apply varnish that I have ever used! This is completely down to the “patented brush technology”. The paddle brush shape is very precise, holds formula well and covers the nail in only a couple of strokes. One thing i did notice is that the formula seemed to become quite stringy and drag on the nail if there wasn’t enough formula on the brush but this is easily rectified and I don’t see it as an overall problem.

The varnish dries with an absolutely gorgeous sheen and gloss and wears really well. After spending the day running after my two boys, my nails still managed to look amazing and chip free.

The colours available in this range are fantastic and there really is something for everyone. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking out for something new for their nails!

The beginnings of The Southside Girl….

To write something, you have to risk making a fool of yourself.”
Anne Rice

I have been sitting staring (okay glaring) at this empty word document for near enough a week now and have come to realise several things;

  • My head really is full of complete and utter rubbish.
  • No pixies, fairies or elves will come out and write this for me.
  • I worry too much about what other people think.
  • Cheese sauce made in a blender really isn’t that nice (this has nothing to do with the blog, more just a general note)

So, I have decided that the best place to start is, of course, with introductions.

I’m a (newly) 26 year old, married mummy of two little boys, Aiden who is nearly 5 and Logan who is 3. We live in your classic two up, two down in the southside of Glasgow. My husband works long, looooong hours and so I am on my own with my boys for the majority of the time, which i love, but which also drives me insane on a daily basis (think talking-to-yourself, knowing all the words of every cartoon, constantly breaking up fights insane!)

Six years ago, i was a typical university-going, funky dancing social butterfly with 18 months of an English degree under my belt. Now, i am attempting to find my way in the world, to do something i love and to make my gorgeous little family proud of me.

There are 6 things in this world that make me the happiest; my beautiful children, my incredible husband, food, books, make up and my ridiculous chats with my amazing best friend. My intentions with this blog? To share all of the things that make me happy, with all of you. I want this blog to be a mixture of things to do both at home and in the local area with your children, book and beauty reviews to enjoy in your “mummy time”, ideas for “date night” (which i’m hoping will mean i actually have one once in a while) my daily ramblings and moanings  (mainly about my husband;) ) along with more serious features including coping with PND and miscarriage.

If you’re after a wee natter, all of my getting in touch information is on my contacts page 🙂

Oh, and here’s a few wee pics of us, for you. I know, we’re a handsome bunch 😉
